I can’t help but come to the conclusion that having a greater number of friends just can’t cut it in this day and Age. Except you’re a celebrity meeting people every other week or live on an island with a population of a 100 , you’ve most likely watched your ‘friend’ list dwindle to one very close person, and that one other person that refuses to give up on you.
And in this time of constant connections and swiping to pick friends online, we get easily deceived that every friendly face on the Internet cares and truly wants what’s best for us, and that my friend — is a Lie. And while social media gives us different shades and means of friendship, we need to remember these few things -
- A friend to all is a friend to None. Having a lot of friends, means meeting a lot of needs.I like to think of my friendship like that of David and Jonathan. If i can’t love you hard like a Sister, then you’re definitely my acquaintance.
- Friends need Access. When I say access, I mean that they need to be all up in your space sometimes. This means they are in the loop most of the time but most importantly, they can understand you enough to know the unspoken boundaries in your friendship.
- True friendship will stand the test of time. When I think of the people that I’ve grown far from, I realize that space and time left a communication gap that couldn’t be filled by banter and Jokes. Once we weren’t in constant communication, we had nothing more to talk about.
Most importantly, remember that friendships should be a gift from God. Can you see a reason for being friends with someone? Do you share the same values? Do they challenge you to live like for your creator? Are you honored and giving honor to this person?
So here’s our meeting point - We’re made to be in fellowship and friendship with people. And with all that energy and devotion involved, we might as well make the few we have count.
Proverbs 18:24 NIV
One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
